Saturday Jazz Prep begins Sept. 8th, 2018
Tri-C's JazzFest Academy gives students the opportunity to develop their skills and perform in both large and small ensembles, through rehearsals that focus on music history, theory and improvisation. Students participate in workshops lead by national artists, throughout the year and during Tri-C JazzFest. The semester will end with a public performance and selected ensembles will perform at local venues.
LOCATION: The Gill and Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts. Park in Lot 5 off Woodland Ave. Street address: 2809 Woodland Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44115.
TIME: Saturdays, 12:30-3:30 p.m. from Sept. 8-Dec. 8, 2018.
Please note: Students who are new to the Jazz Fest Academy are asked to arrive at 10:30am on the first day, Saturday, September 8th, for a quick assessment, introductions, and orientation. Focusing on developing a strong foundation in American popular music, the instrumental track refines section playing and improvisation through playing in a Big Band as well as small group ensembles. (*Students who play AND sing are asked to enroll in the instrumental track and will be accommodated by the music faculty.)
For vocalists, this track focuses on the principles of singing while learning the foundation of American popular music. Singers will perform jazz, blues, swing, and more through the vocal jazz ensemble, small group ensembles and vocal coaching.
Spoken Word Track
Exploring the lyrical and melodic connections between poetry, hip-hop and jazz, this track focuses on the music of Kendrick Lamar, Common, Robert Glasper and other current cultural icons.
