Tri-C JazzFest Summer camp
Directed by Dominick Farinacci
June 18-29, 2018
Work hard, play hard!
Dominick will be leading this year's Tri-C JazzFest Academy Summer Camp: a two-week performance-based camp that incorporates jazz, blues, gospel, R&B and hip-hop. We use jazz as a foundation to help students sharpen their performance, recording and producing skills. The camp also provides students with the opportunity to work with 2018 JazzFest artists and ends with a performance on the outdoor stage at JazzFest. Enroll now in this unique camp and study the music of today’s most influential artists, play their music, and see them in concert at the festival!
In collaboration with Spirit of the Groove, led by Dominick & Johnny Parker, faculty members are comprised of some of the finest artists in the Cleveland area:

Each student will choose a track that aligns with their interests, personality and passion. This track will determine the different classes and ensembles the students will participate in throughout the camp.
Focusing on developing a strong foundation in American popular music, the instrumental track refines section playing and improvisation through playing in a Big Band as well as small group ensembles. (*Students who play AND sing are asked to enroll in the instrumental track and will be accommodated by the music faculty.)
For vocalists, this track focuses on the principles of singing while learning the foundation of American popular music. Singers will perform jazz, blues, swing, and more through the vocal jazz ensemble, small group ensembles and vocal coaching.
Spoken Word Track
Exploring the lyrical and melodic connections between poetry, hip-hop and jazz, this track focuses on the music of Kendrick Lamar, Common, Robert Glasper and other current cultural icons.
Throughout the camp, each student will take core classes that develop their basic foundation of skills and understanding of music and performance. Below are the following core classes that are offered.
Learning the fundamental understanding of scales, modes and progressions, while applying theory and harmony to standard songs and improvisation essential for Jazz and American popular music.
Piano Lab Classes
The basics of the keyboard provide young musicians essential tools for understanding melodies and harmony. These classes introduce piano to build a better understanding of harmony, theory, improvisation, and fundamentals of composing your own music.
Individual study is provided for the development of all musicians on their instrument. Students will study one-on-one and in groups with faculty members of their instrument.
Special topic classes are offered for students to advance their understanding of various areas of producing and presenting music. Students get to choose which specialty class they want to participate in during the camp.
A spoken word workshop designed to unpack the rich relationship between poetry, Hip-Hop and Jazz. Presented by Orlando Watson, this class explores the work of modern poets such as Gil Scott-Heron, Common, Kendrick Lamar and others whose influence cultivates the confidence needed for students to discover their own voices through practical exercises and creative application.
A class focusing on recording and producing tracks in a home studio and utilizing the tools in live performance. Students will learn the fundamentals of sound design, basics of music business, and how to brand/market music.
Students attending the camp will focus on melodic delivery, repertoire and phrasing in group and private lessons to develop their understanding of performance and technique. Singers will perform in a vocal ensemble, various small ensembles, and big band.
Students will experience jam sessions and master classes with camp faculty, and renowned artists and performers on music performance, American music history, and working in the industry.
The JazzFest camp features master classes and workshops with such artists and personalities as Geoffrey Golden, Terence Blanchard, Ernie Krivda, Leon Bibb and Kim Nazarian. These programs cover musicianship, Jazz and American music history, working in the industry, and the art of music performance.
Students will experience opportunities to develop their musicianship through listening and sharing music of the legendary artists in multiple genres. These sessions provide students the opportunity to explore the cultural significance of key artists across generations and styles of music. During these sessions, several days will be allocated to the student playing in jam sessions with the instructors, practically applying the skills they are learning in camp to real-time performance.
Small Group Ensembles
In addition to the major ensembles associated with the tracks, campers will have the opportunity to perform in small ensembles to develop further understanding and skills in jazz, blues, and American pop music.
Smokestack Lightning Blues Ensemble
The Smokestack Lighting Blues Ensemble focuses on music that emerged from Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City by artists like Muddy Waters, Louis Jordan, T-Bone Walker, and B.B. King, who transformed the Blues scene from the 1940’s to today.
